Past Projects
George A. Shimp II and Associates, Inc. has engaged in many large projects during its 25+ years of existence. This is a sample of a few of these projects.
Oldsmar Park Survey: At the end of 1999 we were involved with a survey of 78 lots near the south end of Race Track Road in Oldsmar, Florida. This survey posed a particularly difficult problem in that the land had been platted but only approximately 10% of the plat was staked and monumented in the field in 1920. The developer ran out of money before the plat was completed. Later, some lots were sold without the benefit of a survey.
We were contacted to survey and consolidate 78 lots for sale to the State of Floirida as a future park site. We relied heavily on new technology to complete this survey. The existing plat of the area was not of much use. It lacked bearings, and in most cases distances, along the lot lines. We had the plat scanned and brought it in as a back drop image in an AutoCAD drawing. We used this and the few given distances to "scale" theoretical coordinates of the original survey points and lot corners.
We took these coordinates into the field to try to uncover as many original PRMs (Permanent Reference Monuments) as possible. We initially set GPS control points around the project site, then used traditional survey traversing to locate the boundary. At the end, we uncovered 13 original monuments, some of which may not have been uncovered in 65 years or more. The accuracy of our theoretical points ranged from 0.75 feet to about eight feet from the original monuments we found. The range of accuracy was surprisingly good, when it is considered that we had no original coordinate geometry to work from.
To finish the project, we set the missing monumentation and delivered the survey one week ahead of schedule.
McDonald's Corporation: George A. Shimp II & Associates Inc. has been a surveying consultant to the McDonald's Corporation since 1982. Over the years, we have performed surveys from as far south as Okeechobee and as far northwest as Pensacola. The scope of the services has included boundary surveys, topographic/engineering surveys, construction lay-out, and "as-built" surveying. George A. Shimp II also has provided expert witness testimony in a civil trial in defense of McDonald's.
GTE/Verizon: George A. Shimp II & Associates Inc. has been a long time surveying consultant to GTE/Verizon. We have worked closely with the GTE/Verizon engineers on many projects. We have provided right-of-way staking and mapping services, layout for thousands of feet of fiber-optic conduit, preparation of legal descriptions for easements, and research of right-of-ways and privately owned lands.
